Brief information about Ko Chang

Koh Chang National Park, commonly known as Koh Chang Island, is located in the Laem Ngop district of Trat province, which is in the eastern border region of Thailand. Koh Chang is considered the largest island in the Gulf of Thailand and the second-largest island in Thailand after Phuket. It covers a total area of 268,125 acres and consists of more than 52 large and small islands arranged in a shape resembling a walking elephant, hence its nickname “Elephant Island.” The terrain of Koh Chang is characterized by high mountains, complex rock cliffs, and the highest peak, Khao Salak Phet. Moreover, the island boasts dense forests and numerous waterfalls, thanks to its predominantly mountainous and forested landscape.

Who Ko Chang is for

Koh Chang is ideal for travelers seeking a naturally rich and convenient island getaway. While it may not match the prosperity of Phuket, Koh Chang offers comprehensive amenities such as accommodations, dining options, and various activities. The cost of living on Koh Chang is relatively lower compared to larger islands like Phuket, making it a budget-friendly destination. Accessible from Bangkok without extensive travel, Koh Chang provides a wide range of attractions suitable for almost every type of traveler, with the convenience of ferry transport for bringing vehicles to the island. Private vehicle transportation from Bangkok to Koh Chang takes approximately 4-5 hours, allowing for a relatively quick and straightforward journey. Overall, Koh Chang caters to budget-conscious travelers seeking a diverse range of experiences in a naturally beautiful setting.

Best time to visit Ko Chang

Travelers can visit Koh Chang throughout the year, but the peak tourist season here typically falls during Thailand’s summer, which spans from March to May. However, even during this period, the weather on the island remains relatively mild due to its predominantly humid rainforest terrain with high mountains. Koh Chang is also a source of several streams and waterfalls located on the island. The flat areas near the hillsides are used for growing rubber trees and various fruits by the local residents, including pineapple, watermelon, and durian. There are eight villages on the island: Salak Phet, Salak Khok, Jek Bae, Ban Dan Mai, Khlong Son, Khlong Phrao, Khlong Nonsi, and Ban Bang Bao. These villages have government offices, police stations, hospitals, and serve as the location for the Koh Chang National Park office. Additionally, some parts of the island offer accommodations, restaurants, and various entertainment venues for tourists to enjoy during their visit.
